In 1995, Mumbai was the first city in India to conceptualise and implement Heritage Regulations with a heritage listing of hundreds of buildings, completing 30 years in 2025. Since then, there have been additional listings, region-wide listings as well as addendums and amendments in the Regulations themselves, with these Regulations having been significantly diluted in the DP 2034.
Urban Centre Mumbai has been working and collating information on the Mumbai Heritage Project since 2020, to create a physical and digital archive of thirty years of Mumbai's Heritage Regulations, and to ensure that the process of listing, the history of Regulations, the rich data that went behind the listing and the steps taken by BMC and the MHCC, under the leadership of various Municipal and ex-Municipal Commissioners is not lost.
This project aims to create a comprehensive digital (and physical) repository featuring the timeline of heritage regulations, the MHCC proceedings, current status updates, various relevant documents and other data to capture the 30 years of Mumbai's efforts towards urban and heritage conservation. Through secondary research, on-ground surveys, photo documentation, interviews and public engagement, the project will provide an accessible platform for citizens, students, researchers, historians, policymakers etc. on our dedicated project website, which will go live in 2025 to mark the 30th Anniversary of Mumbai's Heritage Regulations.
