Maharashtra faces significant challenges in healthcare, education, and disaster preparedness, especially in rural and underdeveloped areas. Addressing the gaps in healthcare, education and disaster preparedness across Maharashtra presents significant challenges for the government, requiring extensive resources and planning. To address these gaps, "Plug-in Urbanism" is proposed as a mobile, flexible planning solution. This concept involves the use of mobile units and temporary infrastructure to provide essential services, particularly in areas with limited resources.
Plug-in Urbanism can be used during large-scale events such as the Pandharpur Wari and Kumbh Mela, where mobile healthcare units offering services like eye care, dental treatment, and blood banks can be set up. The efficiency of this approach lies in its mobility. Mobile units can be quickly set up without significant financial or land requirements and can serve a wider population on a rotational basis. This flexibility ensures that resources like healthcare professionals and educational tools can reach underserved areas across the state.
At Urban Centre Mumbai, we are currently working on research proposals for "Plug-in Urbanism" as a concept, envisioned as a flexible and effective way to address major gaps in healthcare, education and disaster preparedness in short time periods.
